I'm a player in my group's ongoing D&D campaign, and awhile back we had a game night where we were going to be short a player -- so our GM ran a one-shot flashback session, with us cast as monsters from centuries ago. Everything we did in that session has come back in the present, and it really enriched the game.

Thanks for writing this, Scott -- it's something I've always wanted to try as a GM, and now I can refer back to your article when I do. :)
Reply

Ok so In my game I subverted a characters background, and he's recently found out he was an Elf (magically altered to be human) and his memories are returning. This is a great idea!

I might have flashbacks so he will be in control of his "history" to a greater degree, and feel more attached. Probably in-game group flashbacks as most of the party was there and "knew him previously" We'll see how it goes, but it's a good starting point!
Reply

In my last campaign, the party had several problems working together. They asked me why would a group of complete strangers ever cooperate with each other. There were several in character conflicts because of it, leading to one character death (killed by the party) and another one put on notice.

At that point, I saw the group template ( http://www.feartheboot.com/resources/2_GroupTemplate.pdf ) from the fear the boot website. Since there was three distinct groups working in the same party, I had them fill out the sheets. I think about 90% of the problems went away after that.

I think your idea of flashbacks could take care of the remainder 10% plus it would provide for a great source of adventures since the players already provided the story on the group template.
Reply
