If you would like a printable version of this post for quick reference, I organized it into a PDF which you can find here. I have recently become intimately aware of the extreme effects of having sickness ravage my body. It is the same kind of awareness I gain after most conventions I go to, or when travelling by airplane. Anytime I’m exposed to masses of people and am putting even just a moderate amount of energy into travelling or socializing/working, that con-crud, nasty flu…

I have not had a good run of games lately. Seems like just a few articles ago I was talking about my new Agents of Oblivion campaign, on the heels of a failed Corporation game. Over the past year, I have not been able to get a game to run for any length of time. So when it looked like Agents of Oblivion was not going to make it, I sat down with my players to find out what was going on, and we learned…

Have you ever had your knowledge of reality interfere with your acceptance of genre conventions? Gamers are usually pretty nerdy, and tend to know quite a bit about gamer-ish topics, sometimes down to a very granular level. RPGs usually emulate genres better than they emulate reality. A GM’s detailed knowledge of reality can conflict with a game that is based on a genre that may only barely resemble reality. Take the Katana (please!) In reality, the katana was the best sword that could be made…

At the end of last month I was laid-off from my job of 13 years. I have been given a severance package, and I have been on several interviews since then. I am very confident that I will probably have a job before the end of the month. You never know, but for various reasons I am highly optimistic given the situation. But my GMing plans have suffered. All of my free time has gone into networking, job hunting, and preparing for interviews. Plus there…

As I write this, my youngest daughter is home from day care with a head cold. She’s in the other room, engaged in a pitched, no-holds-barred fight with the Sleep Monster, but will eventually succumb. In addition to the virus that’s been working its way through the family for the last week and a half, a number of other obstacles have cropped up. Our home server started rebooting at random, taking a week of troubleshooting and rebuilding. My phone decided that it didn’t want to…

We’ve all been there: The game is going gangbusters, but it’s getting late. People have work or school in the morning, and you have to stop soon — even though the adventure isn’t over. Before my baby daughter Lark was in the picture, I was up for gaming until two or three in the morning on Saturday nights. I could sleep in the next day without any worries, so quitting time didn’t really matter. These days? I need my sleep. So what do you do…

Tell us a little bit about yourself… You’ve probably come up with some oddball character backgrounds, either trying to justify your twinked and leveraged character build, or just because a Somali Pirate-Ninja would be cool. (What’s not to like about a swashbuckling sneak with his own supertanker?) But have you given much thought as to your own background? What elements from your own past have you used, either to run or play RPGs? (Hey, GMs are a players, too!) I’ll bet that you’re using some…
