There were 20 entries in the second annual New Year, New Game challenge. That’s a big drop from the first year’s 57, but there were still some excellent ideas (that followed the rules!) in the mix. Our two winners offered up wildly different ideas joined by a common thread: They sound like really cool games to play in. Without further ado, the winners are… Second Prize In second place is Gnome Stew reader Cloudyone, whose “Abandoned Heroes” pitch went like this: 冷落罗汉 (The Abandoned Heroes)…

Today is the last day to enter our 2013 New Year, New Game challenge and submit your post for the 2013 NYNG blog carnival. Sometime tonight I’ll shut the contest down and start pulling everything together for the big wrap-up post for the blog carnival. Don’t wait too long! (Comments on this post have been turned off so that no one accidentally tries to enter the contest here, which wouldn’t count.)

Welcome to the second annual New Year, New Game challenge! New Year, New Game (NYNG for short) is a Gnome Stew venture that began in 2012 — an annual challenge to GMs all over the world: Run a new game this year. NYNG runs from January 14 to January 28 this year. Last year’s NYNG contest resulted in 57 game ideas for 39 RPGs and 15 blog posts about running new games. I’d love to top both of those numbers this year. We hope NYNG…

As part of our second annual New Year, New Game challenge, we’re also running our second blog carnival! This is separate from the 2013 NYNG contest, although the timeframe is the same and folks are welcome to both enter the contest and take part in the blog carnival. A blog carnival is an event that features multiple blogs contributing posts on the same broad topic, in this case posts about running a new game. We’ll be linking to NYNG posts throughout the challenge, and then…

This past January, we launched the first annual New Year, New Game (NYNG) challenge with a simple goal: Run a new game this year. We held a contest, ran a blog carnival, and received 57 game ideas for 39 RPGs from readers who were planning to run a new game in 2012. With NYNG 2013 roughly six months away, we’re at the halfway point — a good time to ask folks who are taking the NYNG challenge how things are going. Have you run a…

Here’s one way that you can tell that our first annual New Year, New Game challenge had some excellent entries: After the first round of secret ballot voting for our favorites, there was a three-way tie. We broke that tie with a runoff vote between those three entries. Because we received over 50 entries in the contest — the threshold for awarding a second prize — we’ll be giving away two awesome prize packages courtesy of our sponsors: DriveThruRPG, Engine Publishing, Obsidian Portal, and Tabletop…
