At Marcon this year, aside from making $100 dollars for charity the hard way, I played in a playtest of a game called curse the darkness (lowercase, as if it were being whispered). It is being created by Matt McFarland and you can find more info about it on the curse the darkness homepage or its kickstarter. You can also see the post about our game session here. I’m going to do a review of the game based off of my play experiences and the…

With Great Power is an RPG by Michael S. Miller that I’ve had on my shelf for a while. Flipping through it kindles bright “I want to run this” ideas. I planned for it to slot as a filler game for my home group (to buy time for other GMs to prepare prep-heavy games) and thought it would be fun to run at our monthly roleplaying meetup. With that in mind, I read, prepped, and printed references, and got ready to play. Update: When I…

With our regular game canceled last week, we tried out a game that has been neglected on my shelf for too long. The game was In A Wicked Age. It features a short rulebook, simple character sheets, and seemed perfect for a fill in game. We got started a little late, didn’t get all the characters tied together, and quit a few scenes before we reached the end–but it was a fun experiment anyway. Here are some key elements that might work for you, whatever…

A few weeks ago, I reviewed Fiasco (here and here), by Bully Pulpit Games; a game about ordinary people, attempting ambitious plans, and flailing miserably. During and after my review, I had a chance to exchange emails with Fiasco’s creator Jason Morningstar, and got to ask Jason about his GMing philosophy, about his company Bully Pulpit Games, and of course about Fiasco. Jason, let us start by having you tell us a bit about yourself, how you got into RPG’s and what you are playing right…

When we last left off, I had taken you through the Fiasco book and mechanics. (If you missed yesterday’s article go back and read it…now). The real question is, how does this game actually play, without any prep or any GM? The short answer is that it does it quite well, but to really understand, let me tell you about a guy name Rico. Rico Is So Dead Shortly after I finished reading the Fiasco rulebook, my group and I were supposed to have a…

Today I am going to review a game that does not require a GM. Yes, its true. Let me repeat that. Gnome Stew, the leading blog for GM advice, is going to review an RPG that does not use a GM. Today I will take you through the game book and discuss the nuts and bolts, and then tomorrow, I will show you why playing it will make you a better GM, and your players better players. Trust me…what could go wrong? Disclosure time—Bully Pulpit…
