One of the concepts that has taken root in the “Doctor Who” universe is that of “fixed points in time” — a clever way to say that some events can’t be changed because they are crucial to the fabric of the universe … yada, yada, yada. . It’s a storytelling technique that explains why even River Song can’t kill Hitler to spare us the horrors of World War II or Mount Vesuvius will destroy Pompeii no matter what (or because of any) actions the Doctor…

During a break at the Saturday Gaming Group’s last session, I brought up the notion of doing a steampunk campaign when the current Steffenhold campaign reached a natural stopping point.* Save for one other member of the table, I got a round of quizzical expressions. “Steampunk? What’s that?” I was surprised. I really thought the genre of brass goggle-wearing adventurers and steam-chugging flying contraptions was more widely understood. No matter, it was an excellent chance to share with them, by example, what steampunk can be.**…

In the December edition of Atomic Array, game designer James Maliszewski of Rogue Games explained why he included random encounters in his latest adventure, “The Cursed Chateau,” which is billed as an old-school funhouse-styled scenario along the lines of the classic module “Castle Amber.” Interestingly, he said he did it for the GM’s enjoyment. Maliszewski said he loves to include random encounters because it allows the course of a published adventure to take surprising twists and turns, even to the GM who has read it…

What’s the Crock Pot? Just a simmering bowl of lentils and herbs, with a dash of DMing observations. Don’t be afraid to dip in your ladle and stir, or throw in something from your own spice rack. So, with a gazillion cable TV channels — why is it there is so little on TV that appeals to me, as a gamer? I mean, you can’t spin the dial without stumbling into a network televising some folks in dark glasses gathered around a poker table playing…

Strangely enough, the GM’s role is strikingly similar to that of a professional wrestling promoter, especially the person responsible for booking the matches. You want to see the Dream Team of Brutus Beefcake and Greg “the Hammer” Valentine take on the Hart Foundation of Bret “the Hitman” Hart, Jim “the Anvil” Neidhart and their manager, the man on the megaphone, Jimmy “Mouth of the South” Hart? (I believe I have just dated myself with this reference …. Uhm, shall we continue?) Well, the booker makes…

What’s the Crock Pot? Just a simmering bowl of lentils and herbs, with a dash of DMing observations. Don’t be afraid to dip in your ladle and stir, or throw in something from your own spice rack. Good GMs need inspiration. Movies, TV, music and video games all figure into the mix, of course. But nothing beats a good book. The events of the past month have sent many of us looking into the roots of our hobby. And if anything is made clear, it…

Back in the saddle again First, thanks to Martin and the gang for allowing me to take a short hiatus. Dave Arneson, 1947-2009 Unfortunately I wasn’t able to post my appreciation of D&D co-creator Dave Arneson shortly after his death on April 7. But I hope even a…
