Thanks! This article is just what I was looking for in a review of Geist. I picked up a Wraith book a while back, but never really got how to play a character in it in a group. But with Geist, It feels like I can play the WoD portion with a group quite well, and at any time dip into the Wraith portion if i wanted to. Well done, cheers!
Reply

Thank you all for reading this preview! It was fun to write, and it definitely whetted my appetite for the hardcover.

@widderslainte - The krewes are a biggie. Like all of the nWoD games, there's an explicit party element; Geist encourages players to work together to design their krewe.

Being part of a shared ghost story -- particularly if you don't know everything else that's out there, or that there are many others like you -- is also a compelling reason to stick together. This was present in Wraith, too, but it felt shakier to me.

There's also kind of an anti-reason: They don't automatically have reasons to hate each other, like they would have in Wraith -- and since everyone isn't falling back on their mini-plot Fetters, the group can go in one direction much more easily.
Reply

"The PCs are all part of the same group — their krewe, a nod to Carnivale (and a recurring theme throughout Geist) — and have ample reasons to stick together and share the same stories."

So what are the reasons for PCs to stick together?
Reply

I agree the NWoD Hunter is nothing like the old one. I found the old versions sort of "charged by the divine," or whatever it was that gave the characters their abilities, vibe to be very interesting. I could mold it into a sort of "supernatural immune response" of the human race regarding the other supernatural forces. The NWoD version has information on how the real world responds to heavily armed people who claim to be killing monsters (short version), and I like that, but it is a very different vibe.

Wraith had lots of potential to be a really fascinating game, but had some serious problems (touched on in the article). I'm pleased that there will be a new one that deals with ghosts and what-not. I wouldn't mind seeing something with PC ghosts who can interact more with the world, but this seems like it could work really well.
Reply

I'm not a huge fan of White Wolf, for reasons not worth going into. But you've gotten me very interested in this game.

Since the range of play is so broad, yet deals with pretty sensitive material, I suspect this is one game where either you'd want to know you players pretty well, or you'd want to spend some time discussing the theme and style of the game.
<a href="#" class="replyto" onclick="replyto('6683','Kurt \"Telas\" Schneider'); return false;">Reply

I am plenty-stoked for this. When I read the quickstart, I sold it to my crew as "all the stuff we liked about Wrait, Orpheus, and Demon, without a lot of the things we didn't". Of course, my impression is a very surface-level one, but it sounds like your experience is similar.
Reply

"hot tranny mess" Really now?
That one cuts deep.

I always love to look at the nWoD books for the consistently themed art. Glad to have gotten a peek at some great pieces here!
Reply
