It should also be pointed out that not playing the alignment you chose results in honor loss. When your honor reaches zero, you change alignments and can then start gaining honor for doing the same thing you've been doing. No loss of level, or EXP, or any of that.
Reply

@Robert I would also disagree, having played years of D&D picking an alignment is a big part of a character. While alignments can change, you should be playing the choices you made as that's how the character was raised and the choices he made to become that way. I personally have no problems rewarding the characters for continuing to play that.
<a href="#" class="replyto" onclick="replyto('7605','Tyson J.
@Robert - I disagree. If your character is a specific alignment, then you should be playing them with that in mind. Also, if you are the Fighter, and you are thinking through problems in a way that a Thief does, that is also not really playing to your character.

The nice part is that the GM is the final arbitrator of what is "in character" or not, so you don't have to a stereotype, but it does encourage players to consider their class and alignment, while taking actions.
Reply

“For me, the most interesting part of the honor system is that it is awarded in part though the proper play of class, alignment, and quirks and flaws. I like that there there is a mechanical incentive that reinforces good role playing.”

Heh! I’m not sure that conforming to stereotypes really qualifies as “good role playing”.
Reply

@Revil Fox-- Thanks for the additional information. BTW, look for me to mention you in tomorrows article for some advice you gave me last week.

@Saragon-- Without giving anything away for tomorrow, running the game was a lot of fun, and gave me, as a GM a very Old School feel, but kept me on my toes with some very fun mechanics.

@Tyson-- Character generation took about an hour. Attributes go quickly, but the spending of the Building Points can slow down as you start to really customize the characters.

I think everyone was pretty happy with the options you have in the initial build. Its not limitless, but you do have to make some decisions on how many bonus BP's you want, what skills you need, weapon proficiencies, class, attribute changes, etc.

When it was done, you do feel like you created a unique character.
Reply

I quite enjoyed your review. One thing I am curious is how quick character generation was. From your description it sounds like roll some dice and your done. Were your players happy with these choices or did they want to customize their characters more?
<a href="#" class="replyto" onclick="replyto('7596','Tyson J.
This looks pretty good from your description -- if I ever get in the mood for an old-school game I might pick this up rather than making my friends break out their old red boxes. (Certainly this seems like it combines old-school "be smart or die" gaming with some modern mechanics.) Tasty.
Reply

Great review so far! I'm eagerly awaiting the combat review tomorrow. Just to let people know, Kenzerco is releasing Advanced material for Hackmaster in it's Knights of the Dinner Table comic, as well as in it's quartly PDF magazine "Hackjournal". So far they've got another (evil) Cleric class, rules for horses, some new spells, Quirks and Flaws, and a ton of new equipment. (if you're into that kind of thing, look for a review on the added rules over at The Labyrinth in the next couple days).

I also think it's worth a mention that all Cleric classes are not the same in this game. Each Cleric gets some bonuses and restrictions depending on what God they follow. It adds a nice bit of flavor to the game, and it's easy to adapt for your own game world.
Reply
