I used to run vampire games in my garage so that I could block out the light and control a lot of the conditions. It felt darker and less polished than gaming in a comfy living room. I've also done the tables and chairs as props thing. I have a low slung square coffee table that looks very japanese. We played a japanese themed shadowrun game using that and kneeling (until we got tired and knee-sore). Lot of great advice here Walt!
Reply

@ BryanB - I do have to try out that Star Trek one.

Another one that just popped into my head is a "Stargate" set up. If you have two rooms available, one could be used for Earth/Briefing, and another for "through the Stargate." Since the earthbound scenes would likely not include much dice rolling, you could use a "table-less" set-up for that and keep the table for the meat of the adventure.

Heck, if you wanted to go all out you could hang streamers or something in the doorway to simulate walking through the portal.
Reply

The Star Trek bridge setup sounds like an interesting change of pace. I don't think I could pull that one off unless I was able to game in our conference room at work.
Reply
