Contest: Win Free Dice or a Gnome Stew Dice Bag

Posted By Martin Ralya On January 5, 2009 @ 4:30 am In Gnome Gnews | Comments Disabled

It’s been a little while since our last contest, and we thought we’d get 2009 started off right with another one. This time around, you can win one of two sets of dice or a custom Gnome Stew dice bag.

Thanks to Our Sponsors

This contest is sponsored by Game Master Dice, who provided the two sets of dice, and Marsbarn Designs, who gave us the custom Gnome Stew dice bag. (I reviewed Marsbarn’s dice bags in a past article.) Check ‘em both out!

Win Fabulous Prizes

We’re giving away two sets of poly dice from Game Master Dice. Maybe you need a fresh set of dice, or an extra set for one of your buddies — or maybe you’re the player who always forgets your dice. Either way, we’ve got you covered:

…and a custom Gnome Stew dice bag, courtesy of Marsbarn Designs:

Which, incidentally, is fully reversible:

I can’t emphasize enough how great Marsbarn’s bags are. I’ve used mine weekly for several months now, and it still looks like new.

How to Enter

You can enter this contest by posting a comment on this article. To do that, you’ll need to be a Gnome Stew member; it’s free to join this site, and you can register an account right here.

Everyone who posts a comment will be eligible to win one of the two sets of poly dice. (If you post more than one comment, you still only get one entry.) That’s it — post anything you like, and you’re entered to win one of the two sets of dice.

To win the custom Gnome Stew dice bag, you’ll need to guess how many dice I own — based on the picture of the huge pile o’ dice that follows. If you’d like a shot at winning the bag, put your guess in your comment. Whoever comes closest without going over will win this puppy. (If we need a tiebreaker, it will be guessing the number of d30s I own; the secondary tiebreaker is a die roll.)

You can only win one prize, and as always Gnome Stew authors are ineligible to win.

Please note that I’ll be emailing the winners at the email address used for your Gnome Stew account — make sure it’s a valid email address. I’ll put the dice winners directly in touch with Game Master Dice to claim their prizes. I will personally mail the custom Gnome Stew dice bag to whoever wins that prize.

The Pile

Here’s a big pile o’ dice (check out the larger image):

My entire dice collection is in that pile. There are a few dice in small bags or containers that aren’t visible (they’re buried in dice), but no filler under the pile or anything tricksy like that. And yes, I have counted them (and fuck my ass was that a long process!).

I will provide one hint: I posted the number of dice I owned online several years ago, under a handle; I have acquired more dice since then. The chance of connecting that post and this one is pretty slim, but it is possible.

The Deadline

This contest will end (and the comments on this article will be locked) on Friday, January 9th, 2009 at 7:00 pm Mountain time. We’ll announce the winners the following week in a separate post.

Sound good? Get to commenting and guessing, and good luck to everyone who enters!

Am I allowed to guess a small range? If so, then I will say that it’s somewhere between 1,300 and 1,400. If I must guess just one number, I will guess 1,323.

Number of d30s: 4.

@InspiredOgre – Hmmm, I updated my profile to include my website (A WoW blog, though I write about DnD from time to time.) Its not dynamic? Either way, this reply will have my name link-i-fied, I hope.

I’d say there are 3155 dice, since the bag is not open all the way and gnomes are just DAMN sneaky.

I’ll aim a little lower. 438, with 4 d30s.

I’m going to go with 450 dice, and, I dunno, 8 d30. Although why anyone would own a d30 is beyond me. Today is the 15th anniversary of me as a roleplayer, and I’ve never once seen one used except by people who invent their own 30-point tables.

#30 Comment By nblade On January 5, 2009 @ 10:50 am

With all these numbers flying around, it’s hard to make a solid guess… But I’ll say an even 1000 dice, of which NONE are d30s (I feel very price-is-right with that answer. ONE dollar!)

On a side note, the d30 is obviously useful for huge sized monks in 3.5. =P

1280, with 7 d30s.

#63 Comment By Kurt “Telas” Schneider On January 5, 2009 @ 4:06 pm

The key is to guess, but not go over?

Then there’s definitely at least one die in that picture. And no d30s, because they’re frakking useless.

Martin – You probably haven’t done any prison time, or you wouldn’t have used “fuck my ass” and “long process” in the same sentence.

#64 Comment By cybersavant On January 5, 2009 @ 4:08 pm

Wow. I wonder what my dice would look like all piled up.
So, you have d30s and d100s; but do you have any d3s, d14s or d16s? I do, that plus the alphabet dice and vowel dice.

Anyway, i think probably somewhere around 1,734. Given that most people buy dice in sets of 7 or 10.

Congrats on counting them all. I’ve just barely started to enter them into a checklist, so i know what i have and don’t buy doubles anymore.

#65 Comment By dmscorpio On January 5, 2009 @ 4:19 pm

I’m saying 1515 dice with 7 d30s.

#70 Comment By bilwar On January 5, 2009 @ 5:10 pm

I will guess at 2,000 dice

30d30s

#71 Comment By jonboywalton On January 5, 2009 @ 5:28 pm

I’d say in the region of 615 dice, with five D30s.

And they say you can never have too many dice. (Who am I kidding – that’s just the “rolling-stock envy” talking).

I guess if you ever had to flee a table full of revolting players those D4s could double as caltraps to slow down your pursuers.

#72 Comment By gospog On January 5, 2009 @ 5:39 pm

I’m gonna guess low. 256 dice, four D30′s.

#82 Comment By DocRyder On January 5, 2009 @ 8:28 pm

Entering just to say I did. No counts. I have a friend who could make that same bag. ScottM knows her, too. He just doesn’t know he knows her. :-)

#83 Comment By S. Mayona K. On January 5, 2009 @ 9:09 pm

As someone who has a similar dice pile, I’d like to say that appearances can be deceiving. Because of the tendency for die to roll, they don’t pile up very well. I wouldn’t be surprised if the center mass was only stacked three deep – at most. It looked like there was roughly 900 pieces there, but I like to bet high.

Guess: 1215 die and 10 D30s.

#84 Comment By Psychotic On January 5, 2009 @ 9:28 pm

There must be at least 1457 dice and about 11d30′s (maybe more but i dont see them :( ) and one HUGE d100 :D

#87 Comment By Swordgleam On January 5, 2009 @ 10:30 pm

Everyone else seems to be guessing way too high, so I’m going to bank on everyone else overshooting by a lot, and say 100 dice and 2 d30s.

My pile isn’t quite so large, but it’s getting there. I also have adventure dice, a zodiac die, the “hokey pokey” d12 with body parts that we used to use when people meta-gamed, a d12 with body parts that’s actually useful, a d3, d5 and d14.

#88 Comment By bonefish On January 5, 2009 @ 10:36 pm

I think I’m going to lowball slightly…you have 873 dice and only one d30.

#89 Comment By EvilGM On January 5, 2009 @ 11:06 pm

Sigh…

And I thought I had a respectable pile o dice.

Wow.

You know, frankly, all I want is just one of your emoticon dice. That would be awesome.

But my guess is 700 polyhedral and assorted style dice, and I think that you would have no more that 6 d30′s.

And here goes the jinx line: I’m terrible at guessing, you can just tell, can’t you? (Imagine Marvin the Manically Depressed Robot saying that…)

My dice guess is 3,427 dice, including 12 d30′s. By the way, have you ever actually used a d30 in a game? Is there a role playing game out there that uses d30′s? I mean, I have one too, but I’ve never used it.

#102 Comment By Electrocuted On January 6, 2009 @ 10:00 am

460 dice, with 10 d30s.

Which we use in deadlands when you’re hit by something swinging a telephone pole. Or when we need to decide how many of the wounded villagers die.

#103 Comment By pseudodragon On January 6, 2009 @ 10:01 am

I will guess 1,423 dice and 9 d30′s. You remind me of a friend of mine who had a large beer pitcher of dice (besides his personal stash). We never had to bring dice to his games!

The dice bag looks very cool (love the flames). What kind of material is it made out of? The dice would be a nice addition to my own collection. Yellow is definitely an underrepresented color in my dice box.

Thank you for an enjoyable contest.

#104 Comment By pseudodragon On January 6, 2009 @ 10:05 am

@Bravemaximus – Many years ago, Lou Zocchi produced a 30-sided die with a booklet of 30-sided dice tables. The booklet had tables for D&D encounters, traps, weather, you name it. It’s pretty much a collectable these days and I haven’t seen one in a very long time. I’m sure with a little time and effort you could generate your own 30-slot tables and put that die to good use.

Hey, I just noticed that one of your d20s in the upper left quadrant is the same one that I usually use for D&D. It’s bound to happen when two gamers (one of whom has a massive f***ing collection!) compare, but it’s still neato.

1,001 Dice with 14 d30s.

#107 Comment By graylion On January 6, 2009 @ 11:52 am

Wow nice dice!

At first glance it looks like 666 dice!

But when I recounted my 3rd eye tells me 888 dice.

That is my final answer.

Great blog!

#109 Comment By Tony Graham On January 6, 2009 @ 1:27 pm

I considered constructing a 3D model of the 2D image provided to get an accurate projection of the height of the “big pile o’ dice.”

Unfortunately, I was confronted by the reality that I had no idea how to do such a thing and instead stepped away from the keyboard for the big pile o’ M&Ms kept a careful distance from my chair.

Upon my return, I sought to impose my reality upon your pile (I’m not sure that came out right…) and so hazard the guess that your pile will not fit into the flaming gnome dice bag…. Wait! What was the question?

Right – 1,003 dice in the pile. Plus 7 thirty-sided dice for a grand total of 1,010 individual instruments of fate in the pile.
But don’t hold me to that…

Happy New Year to all! Thanks for the kind words about the Stew, and thanks for entering.

d30s, for the record, make fabulous cat toys. That’s about it, though. ;)

@EvilGM – I’m pretty sure I got the smiley/frowney dice at Koplow’s booth at GenCon a few years back; that’s where I’d start if you want to snag a set. I’ve always imagined I’d use them for random NPC reactions, but it’s never actually come up.

@pseudodragon – The dice bag is made of two layers of thin but strong 100% cotton. They rock.

D’uh! you own 30 d30s! Not because you ever needed them, you just got close to it and thought, “I need that geek badge.”

Er, at least that’s what happened to me when I saw my first packed full skull dice bag.
