DNAPhil - second your note on character sheets. I provided a page protector with PC sheet on one side and drawing of said PC on other. I also handed out a quick glossary of terms/conventions (was running Rolemaster for all skill levels) and went from there. The PC drawings went over pretty well.

Scott - Watching the clock was the single biggest thing for me. I kept a watch on the table in front of me so I could keep track without looking like I was keeping track.

The Gen Con experience is definitely worth repeating. I accomplished so much more this time around due to my prior knowledge. This con was also very different due to the 3.5e/4e circumstances. I trust that alone will make next year feel very different.

DNAPhil- It was good to see you too (and Kurt and Patrick). I did have some custom, easy-to-read sheets (my rules cheat sheet also had full descriptions of the few spells that were on two character sheets).

Sorry to bolt out on you during the GM-Fu session. I looked like death warmed over thanks to the aforementioned Gnomies that kept me up in the penthouse until 2 am :)
Reply

First, it was nice to run into you on Saturday, and get some pictures of us in our Gnome Shirts.

Second, I wanted to add one thing to your list. Good Character sheets. I played in both a Traveler game and an Iron Heroes game. In both cases the GM's made character sheets, rather than using the ones in the book. By making their own, they were able to add in the rules for various feats and abilities, as well as some key tables, right to the sheet. It made it easy for me as a player to find the information I needed, without having to consult a rule book.
Reply

That's a solid list. I don't know if I've ever done a good job of watching the clock-- I suspect that's something I should master before a con like GenCon.

I'm glad that your second GenCon improved on the first-- sounds like a strong argument for repeat attendance to me. ;)
Reply
