When I first heard about it, by way of bad descriptions from friends, I thought it sounded kind of crappy and like wizards was trying to capitalize on the anime revolution that was picking up speed at the time. Then I read it, a few years later, and realized it was more D&D meets film noir (casablanca, maltese falcon) or Indiana Jones. It is definitely worth checking out. And you're right.
